On Sunday March 22,, state regulators directed most Wisconsin utilities to "stop utility disconnection for nonpayment for all customers", cease late fees and defer payments during the COVID-19 public health emergency.(1)
But out-of-work Wisconsinites are facing enormous economic burdens because of a crisis they did not create. This is a crisis that hits people of color, low-income residents and rural communities harder because of how much more of their income they are likely to devote to energy bills; but something we all feel.(2)(3) Deferring payments simply pushes the problem down the road by building up debt hardpressed homeowners and renters may never be able to pay. We have been told to stay in our homes, to do our public duty to protect the health of our fellow citizens. We did not ASK to have our utility bills grow while we wonder how to pay for them.
We believe the fairest thing to do is to waive all utility bills for those out-of-work, especially during Wisconsin's Shelter-in-Place rule. If we have to tighten our belt, we believe giant corporations should have to do so too.
