URGENT: Stop extremist anti-LGBTQ bills

“Religious exemption” bills are moving forward in the Texas Legislature--bills that create special rights solely for those who oppose marriage equality and reject transgender people.

Freedom of religion is important to all of us, including LGBTQ people. It’s one of the founding values of our nation. That’s why it’s already protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. And the good news is that will never change.

But that freedom doesn’t mean imposing one’s religious beliefs onto others.

That’s why I am angered each time I see another bill that creates a license to discriminate by allowing anyone to claim their religious beliefs are violated by treating LGBTQ people as equals.

Just because a health care professional cares for a patient doesn’t mean they share or endorse all of that patient’s beliefs. Just because someone rents out an apartment or hires an employee doesn't mean they endorse every part of that person's life. We all have different beliefs. That’s what makes our country great. It doesn’t mean we discriminate against others. Nobody should be turned away by a health care or other service provider, fired from a job, or denied housing simply because of who they are.

As your constituent, I’m asking you to oppose Senate Bills 1009, 1107, and 15, and House Bill 1035, which would create special rights for certain groups and write discrimination into our state’s laws.

Please focus on what matters and don't entertain such divisive proposed legislation.
