Urge the ICC: Rein in Reckless Gas Utility Spending

Dear Chairman Scott and Commissioners Carrigan, McCabe, Reddick and Paradis:

I urge you to take decisive action to protect Illinois consumers by:

  • Reining in reckless gas utility spending.
  • Managing the transition away from gas that has already begun.

A report by the Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) and Groundwork Data finds that reckless spending by Illinois gas utilities (Ameren Illinois, Nicor Gas, North Shore Gas and Peoples Gas) could have a catastrophic impact on our gas bills, tripling delivery charges over the next decade.

We appreciate the work you've done so far reining in the utilities and launching a Future of Gas proceeding. We ask that you continue this important work: Please stop the utilities from wastefully burning so much money (they've been spending more than $1 billion a year in total) on a system that is heading toward obsolescence, and work on policy to give Illinois consumers cleaner, more affordable options for their heat.

Thank you.
