Urge Springfield to Pass the Water Affordability Act (SB 75)

Aqua Illinois ($11.6 million) and Illinois American Water ($110 million) received rate hikes in 2024--but long before those increases consumers have complained to the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) about excessive water bills. That's because big water companies have successfully pushed for state policy that has allowed them to plunder their customers.

  • Aqua and Illinois American are allowed to charge a “Qualifying Infrastructure Plant” fee that allows those companies to increase bills at a faster rate.
  • Illinois American and Aqua can buy up water and wastewater systems across the state and charge their customers to cover 100 percent of the acquisition costs, under a law passed in 2013. So far these for-profit companies have purchased 56 systems and charged their customers $402 million in acquisition costs.

But Senate Bill 75, The Water Affordability Act, would institute reforms to better protect private water customers from these escalating costs. Please urge your Senators to support SB 75!
