Alec Esparza led a life of service and set out to make the world a better place — and he did. He was an independent, adventurous spirit with a kind heart, a quick wit, and a passion for politics and the environment and helping others. He was a member of the Michigan LCV team and was one of the first Our Water Our Vote organizers. He was also an Associate Board Member of Special Days Camp, and a frequent volunteer for Special Needs Boy Scout Camp Troop, Special Olympics, and the Southwest Detroit Immigration and Refugee Center. His generosity and accomplishments didn't stop there–he was also a kidney donor, Boston Marathon qualifier, and natural mentor to those in need.
Tragically, Alec lost his life when he, true to his character, stopped on a busy road during a major storm to help a stranger who had been in an auto accident. To honor his legacy and his deep commitment to the environment, Michigan LCV Education Fund — with support from Alec's family — established the Alec E. Fund (Activists Leading on Environment and Civic Engagement) to support young people who are working on climate change, climate justice, and democracy in Michigan. Donations can be made directly to Michigan LCV Education Fund. Funds will be given to youth activists in the form of scholarships, stipends, and/or internships to support young people as they also work to make the world a better place.
Our hope is that this fund will be a way for Alec's family and friends to keep his legacy alive for years to come.
