A Conservation Vision for a Better Transportation Future for Jackson Hole - Give Now
PROBLEM: More roads, wider highways and growth are coming to Teton County
It's hard for people and wildlife to get around Jackson Hole. We have seasonal traffic congestion, not enough START Bus service, unsafe intersections and dangerously-fast traffic along with an average of more than 500 large wildlife-vehicle collissions every year. Despite decades of data showing wider roads only encourage people to drive more, we face WYDOT proposals to do just that. They intend to dramatically expand the highways that bisect our community and to add new roads, ultimately increasing traffic and pollution and fundamentally changing the character of our community. But it doesn't have to be this way.
SOLUTION: A clear conservation solution and community mobilization
We are developing a clear vision for the future of our valley's transportation system, starting with the Highway 22/390 corridor. This conservation vision centers on modern solutions, including cutting edge transit infrastructure, that not only make driving around this valley less cumbbersome for everyone, but that also prioritize wilidlife and wild places, mitigate climate change and safeguard what makes our community special. We know there is a better way than building wider hgihways and more roads. We're working with Nelson/Nygaard, a nationally-renowned transportation consulting firm, to make this vision a reality and look forward to sharing their work with the community at a mid-winter launch event.
Our high-level goals are:
Ensure our community's priorities are reflected in the solutions to our transportation challanges that are implemented ifor the WYO 22/390 corridor
Prevent construction of unnecessary new roads like the proposed Tribal Trail Connector and North Bridge
Expand and improve transit service on existing and new routes around the valley for commuters
Implement Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies like - charging for downtown parking - to increase trasit utilization and reduce peak-hour congestion
Advocate for a dedicated funding source for transportation planning and infrastructure investments in the WYDOT right-of-way that align with Teton County's community goals and values
