TAKE ACTION: Send a letter to Congress for better treatment of public lands and federal employees

Recently, in an effort to "create more efficiency" in the federal government, thousands of federal employees were fired: some of whom were employed by our own local US Forest Service offices.

With fewer hands on deck, efforts to manage and maintain ecologically diverse landscapes, enforce environmental regulations, and address ongoing environmental threats are at risk. Resource extraction will be elevated to a higher priority, all other "multiple uses" like conservation and recreation will take a back seat.

Please take a moment to send a letter to your Congressional representatives to highlight your deep appreciation for public lands and the fired public servants of the agencies, and demand better funding and treatment for the aspects of public lands that protect them for all. Consider adding your thoughts and concerns to personalize this letter.

I am a public land user, I love the waters, plants, and wildlife found on federal public lands. The recent mass firings of personnel within the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are wrong, and will severely impact the experience of myself and millions of other visitors to public lands. With hundreds of millions of acres of land managed by these agencies, we need a strong and robust workforce to ensure that laws and regulations are enforced, trails are maintained, campgrounds and other visitor facilities are staffed, public safety is prioritized, and wildfire mitigation and prevention efforts continue.

I urge you to advocate for sustained, and even increased, funding for federal land management agencies who have already been working with limited capacity for some time. Please resist any efforts to further shrink or reduce the federal workforce without a close review of how these positions serve our country and Americans. The en masse layoffs and funding cuts and freezes put rural communities at risk, especially those that serve as gateway communities for National Parks and other recreation destinations. It will also have major impacts on the safety of communities nationwide with the loss of wildland firefighting workforce during a growing era of wildfire.

I also encourage you to uphold the government’s trust and treaty rights with Tribes and continue advancing co-management and co-stewardship opportunities with Indigenous communities who have lived on, and stewarded, these same public lands for thousands of years. Working and collaborating with Tribes is not a DEI issue, it’s a trust and treaty obligation to work with sovereign Tribes and their peoples.
