Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners
6980 Sierra Center Parkway, Suite 120 Reno, Nevada 89511
Dear Commissioners,
On behalf of the voters in Nevada, we are writing to urge you to ban the scourge of Wildlife Killing Contests in our state. The undersigned supporters and I believe that our wildlife and our public deserve better care than to allow this bloodsport to continue unchecked.
Recently, the Clark County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to condemn wildlife killing contests and imploring the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners to take action to ban these contests. We hope you will act in accordance with the resolution in a timely manner and consider a ban on wildlife killing contests in your next meeting.
Taking a neutral position towards Wildlife Killing Contests threatens the families of Nevada, our eco-tourism on our public and BLM lands, and the future of hunting itself. Publicly shared pictures, video, and rhetoric abound and reverberate across the state as the public becomes more familiar with these gruesome spectacles.
Images of children dragging fox carcasses across fields and parking lots to weigh-in check stations
Videos of groups of people laughing as they count the victims in the back of their pick-up trucks
Pictures of the belt buckles, gun equipment, and plaques the winners receive
Smiling selfies of the winners posed in front of an enormous pyramid of stacked bodies
Videos of fur buyers who callously throw out the vast majority of animals because the small amount of fur left undamaged during the kill is not worth the time and effort to process and sell
The stories of those who delight in simply injuring some of these animals, relishing the idea of creating “spinners” — shooting high across the top of the spine of an animal, to see them lose control of the back legs and spin in agony
Nevadans trust the Wildlife Commission to protect our treasured public lands and our recreational areas that bring so much joy to residents. By introducing a resolution to condemn wildlife killing contests, the Wildlife Commission will galvanize the movement to:
Provide a place for wildlife to thrive
Ensure the public's safety from stray bullets that may injure or kill Nevadans enjoying the outdoor recreation areas we treasure
Uphold the values of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, including killing only for legitimate purposes
State that contest killing, which rewards participants for killing the most, the heaviest, and the smallest of a given species IS NOT SPORTSMANSHIP
It's time for the Board of Wildlife Commissioners to take a stand against these cruel contests, saving both the lives of animals that reside on our public lands and protect our families and children who ought to enjoy these lands safely. We call upon you Commissioners to take a stand against these dangerous contests and speak in opposition to their occurrence in our state.
Sincerely,
Animal Wellness Action
