Demand fair maps and representation in the City of Miami!

It's time to end racial gerrymandering in the City of Miami. Miami residents deserve fair maps that don't divide our communities.

On May 23, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida issued a preliminary injunction ordering the City of Miami to redraw our district maps to replace the maps they passed last year that unconstitutionally divide voters along racial lines, slicing through our neighborhoods and violating our rights. The City of Miami appealed the injunction.

Individual City of Miami residents, as well as community orgs GRACE, NAACP of Miami-Dade and South Dade, and Engage Miami, submitted community maps to the City Commission to start the conversation and spark community discussion. You can view the maps at aclufl.org/miami-maps

These maps feature compact and logical districts that respect neighborhoods, follow major  geographic boundaries, and preserve genuine communities of interest. They undo the racial gerrymandering that has violated Miamians' rights to equal protection of the laws, while also complying with the crucial mandates of the Voting Rights Act.

Join us in emailing our City Commissioners to demand they pass fair maps. Enter your information to be directly routed to the City Commission. Personalize your email by using the form below.

Here are some points to help you personalize your message:

  • The city needs to drop its appeal of the federal injunction and fully comply with the court's order.

  • The City Commission should listen to the public and work with the plaintiffs to find common ground.

  • We need compact, logical districts that respect neighborhoods and follow major geographic boundaries. No more sprawling districts with irregular appendages that chop up our communities.

  • The city must comply with the Voting Rights Act to protect Black voters' rights to equal representation—not pack Black voters and diminish their influence.

  • The Commission must not draw districts to gerrymander and favor incumbents.

  • The Commission should consider adding seats so that more diversity and more representation can sit on the dais.

  • We need to enshrine Fair Districts standards into our Charter and take redistricting out of politicians' hands. Put a citizens' redistricting commission on the ballot.
