Add Your Name: Condemn Holocaust Distortion

Republicans in Congress are exploiting and distorting the Holocaust to promote the extreme right's political agenda. From Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's “Gazpacho police” references to Fox News pundit Lara Logan's comparison of Dr. Anthony Fauci to Nazi scientist Josef Mengele, Republicans continue to shamefully and inaccurately compare COVID-19 restrictions to the Holocaust, including equating COVID-19 vaccination cards with the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe. More recently, the Michigan Republican party compared gun control efforts to the Holocaust; the tweet is still up, despite widespread condemnation.

While some of these comparisons are comically absurd, we must look past the jokes and condemn these dangerous statements. Greene and other Republicans continue to engage in vile Holocaust distortion. It's wrong, it feeds into antisemitic Holocaust denial, and it must stop now.

A study by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum reported an accelerating trend toward distortion of Holocaust history in mainstream political and public discourse in the past decade. This trend threatens decades of progress.

Holocaust denial and distortion constitute an assault on our communal memory. Erasing the atrocious history of the Holocaust threatens our understanding of that uniquely horrific genocide and threatens our ability to prevent future attacks on our freedom and democracy. Join JDCA by rejecting Holocaust distortion, including by Republican elected officials and leaders.
