Deadline August 20: Take Action Now

The U.S. Forest Service is accepting public comments on the Fall 2020 helicopter roundup of 500 more horses from the Devil's Garden Wild Horse Territory that will continue the mismanagement of California's largest and most historic wild horse herd.

To reach its goal of an absurdly low Appropriate Management Level of between 206-402 wild horses on the 258,000-acre Territory, the agency has already removed 932 wild horses from their federally protected habitat in 2018 and another 499 horses in 2019.

At the same time, it refuses to implement any fertility control program to humanely reduce population growth rates as recommended by the National Academy of Sciences – even though AWHC offered to fully fund and develop a PZP pilot project two years ago.

While the Forest Service repeatedly claims that the massive removals are necessary to save the Devil's Garden wild horses from starvation and to protect the public rangelands from damage caused solely by them, the real reason is to allow private ranchers to continue grazing their livestock on their public allotments. After the 2018 removal of horses, for example, the agency allowed 300 cow/calf pairs to be returned for grazing the following summer.
