HB 387- Comprehensive Community Safety Funding Act

This bill will create an urgently needed, reliable, stable funding source for violence prevention programs and survivor support programs across Maryland. It will also support a holistic public health approach by which multiple state and private organizations work together in reducing gun violence.

Survivors of homicide victims require victim assistance, advocacy, and support as they deal with their grief and trauma from the loss of their loved ones. It is estimated that these services will cost taxpayers $384 million.

However, in light of the budget shortfall, we will need to be creative to procure sustained funding of effective  programs. This bill would direct some funds from the purchase of guns or ammunition to fund assistance to communities impacted by gun violence. This tax targets the industry profits, not  consumers, and supports programs vital to our communities.
