Early this year, the New York Times published the article “A Cruel Way to Control Bird Flu? Poultry Giants Cull and Cash In,” outlining an issue that many animal rights organizations have been warning about for years. Farmers impacted by the spread of HPAI, the current strain of avian influenza, are receiving insurance payouts to reimburse them for killing the birds on their farms if HPAI is found on site. Many of these farms are using ventilation shutdown to kill tens of thousands of birds at a time, locking them in their barns with no airflow until they die from heatstroke or suffocation.
Because farmers are reimbursed for their lost "product," there is no business or financial incentive for them to take measures to curb the spread of HPAI on their farms. If they are faced with a single bird who tests positive for HPAI, they can kill all their birds with no impact to their bottom line. Since HPAI emerged in the US in 2022, over 80 million birds have been preemptively killed, most having never contracted the disease. The farms where they died are receiving millions of US taxpayer dollars in reimbursement as a result. Motivated by these large payouts, why would farms change their practices and focus on costly prevention measures? They are empowered to continue to endanger the country by engaging in the very animal farming that causes HPAI to mutate and spread.
Help us reach 5,000 signatures by June 1st. Sign this petition to tell the US Secretary of Agriculture that you DON'T want your tax money going to bail out farms engaging in mass culling.
