It's time for North Carolina to expand Medicaid.

More than 680,000 working North Carolinians live in the coverage gap: unable to qualify for Medicaid, but earning far too little to buy insurance on their own. Some are small business owners, others are independent contractors, and many are service workers. They all share the experience of being unable to go to the doctor when they are sick

North Carolina is one of just 12 states that have not yet expanded Medicaid, creating this unconscionable gap. For years our General Assembly has cited costs as their reason for not doing it. But the latest COVID relief package offers our state at least $1.7 billion for healthcare costs IF we expand Medicaid.

This fight has been going on for too long. Expanding Medicaid would make sure our loved ones can see a doctor without entering into a lifetime of debt, keep our rural hospitals open and strong, and help combat the opioid epidemic. It's time the NCGA stops playing partisan politics with our lives. Rural North Carolinians need Medicaid expansion NOW.
