Our nation's system of background checks has glaring gaps that put all of us in danger, including loopholes for online and gun show sales. Recent research suggests that 1 in 9 online sales wouldn't have gone through if those buyers were subject to the same background checks that purchasers in brick and mortar shops are required to go through. The Department of Justice has proposed a rule that would close some of those loopholes, and they're already hearing from the gun lobby to back down and keep letting sales go through without background checks. Dear Attorney General Garland,

I am submitting a comment supporting the proposed rule to ensure that individuals “engaged in the business” of selling firearms are licensed. There are dangerous loopholes in our nation's background check process because not everyone who is engaged in firearms sales are correctly classified as "in the business" of selling firearms. This includes some sellers at gun shows and online retailers. The proposed rule would close some of those gaps by clarifying who needs to obtain federal firearm licenses and, as a result, who needs to have background checks conducted to ensure that guns don't fall into the hands of dangerous individuals. Recent research shows that guns purchased at gun shows are increasingly appearing at crime scenes, with an almost 20% increase in such firearms being recovered. In fact, researchers have found that up to 1 in 9 individuals who purchased a firearm online would have failed a background check if they were subjected to it. This is a deadly loophole that must be closed.

Guns are now the leading cause of death for children and young people in our country. As an American, that is an urgent, existential crisis. I'm writing to you in support of this regulation to take one step closer to closing deadly loopholes of online and gun show sales, to ensure that all individuals are subject to a background check, and to promote responsible sales and possession of firearms.
