The Varied Thrush in the image above died after colliding with a window in Seattle.
This was not an isolated incident. Results from the Seattle Bird Collision Monitoring Project suggest that collisions at homes in Seattle kill more than 80,000 birds per year. Many thousands more are killed in cities, towns, and rural areas across Washington. All told, collisions kill more than one billion birds each year in the United States.
Unfortunately, Washington cities are behind the curve in reducing bird-window collisions. Dozens of jurisdictions have already adopted bird-safe building standards, including major West Coast cities like Portland, OR; Vancouver, B.C.; and San Francisco, CA. Even New York City has bird-safe building regulations in place.
If New York City can do it, we can too.
Tell your representatives that it's time for bird-safe cities now!
