Amazon Worker Public Support Letter

Dear Mr. Andy Jassy,

We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, write to express our grave concern and strong support for Amazon warehouse workers demanding fair compensation and safer working conditions. Recent reports, including those from the Senate HELP Committee and researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago, have revealed troubling data about workplace injuries, economic insecurity, and inadequate wages among Amazon's frontline workforce.

The Senate HELP Committee's report reveals alarming statistics - including a staggering 45 injuries per 100 workers - during peak times like Prime Day in 2019. This is unacceptable for a company of Amazon's size and resources, and indicates systemic problems stemming from unsafe work speeds and intense pressure on employees. Furthermore, the company's practice of discouraging workers from seeking outside medical care to avoid reporting injuries to OSHA is deeply troubling.

New research from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Center for Urban Economic Development also shows that many Amazon workers struggle with basic economic security. Their survey found that in the previous three months, 53% of workers experienced food insecurity, 48% faced housing insecurity, and 33% relied on public assistance programs like SNAP.

Alarmingly, the study found that workers who take unpaid time off due to pain or exhaustion from their job at Amazon face even greater economic hardship. These findings paint a stark picture of the financial struggles faced by many of your employees, despite working for one of the world's most valuable companies.

In light of these findings and ongoing worker organizing efforts, we call on Amazon to immediately to take the necessary actions to improve conditions for its warehouse workers:

  • Increase the minimum wage to $25 per hour for all warehouse workers, and eliminate the cap on wage step increases after three years of service, allowing for continued wage growth based on experience and tenure.
  • Comply fully with quota transparency laws, providing workers with clear information about productivity expectations and how they are measured, and end the use of work rate as a basis for disciplinary action.
  • Implement comprehensive heat protection measures in all facilities, including adequate cooling, hydration stations, and heat stress prevention protocols.
  • Report all injuries to OSHA and cooperate fully with OSHA investigations and requests for safety improvements.
  • Respect workers' right to organize and form a union without employer interference.

Amazon has the resources to be an industry leader in worker compensation and safety. As one of the largest employers in the world, the company has a responsibility to ensure its workers can achieve economic security and perform their jobs without risking their health and well-being.

We urge you to take immediate action on these issues. Your response will demonstrate Amazon's commitment to valuing its workforce and setting a positive example for the entire logistics industry.

Sincerely,
