Fall at AAUW: A Season of Change, Inspiration, and Opportunity

Hello, AAUW Member!

I always enjoy the coming of fall (despite my tree allergies!), as leaves start changing to brilliant red and gold and the air becomes crisp and cool. But I also love September because AAUW fellowships and grants applications begin to roll in from remarkable women across the country and around the world. It's inspiring to see so many exceptional individuals who are doing important work, advancing their careers, and ultimately benefiting society in meaningful ways.

I am proud that AAUW continues to empower hundreds of brilliant women scholars and community organizations to realize their full potential every year through our awards. These recipients reflect the great diversity of backgrounds, nationalities, interests, and pursuits that is our strength. We especially encourage women of color to apply for our fellowships and grants, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to breaking down barriers and access to education and career advancement that persist for so many women.

If you follow AAUW on social media, (and I hope you will if you don’t already!) you know that we are participating in the United Nations’ Week of Action to advance its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A concerning new report shows progress toward the goal of achieving gender equality globally is under threat. I represented AAUW at the UN this week to support the acceleration of progress toward the critically important SDGs, and I encourage you to join us by sharing our social media content and/or by engaging in one of the many other ways the UN suggests.

And as you follow us on social media, please keep an eye out and share posts spotlighting our amazing Latina alumnae, as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15. Join us by participating in a tweet storm on Latina Equal Pay Day on October 5 to demand equal pay for Latina workers, who make only 52% of what white non-Hispanic white men earn. They deserve better!

So heading into fall, AAUW is as busy as ever fighting for gender equity and working to empower women and girls to reach their greatest potential. It’s because of your continued support that we’re able to do it. Thank you for your dedication to our mission and your confidence that together, we will achieve equity for all.

In solidarity,

Gloria L. Blackwell

Chief Executive Officer

TAKING ACTION

Demand Equal Pay for Latina Workers

Join us on October 5 for a social media storm to recognize #LatinaEqualPayDay and demand an end to the pay gap. Latina women, including part-time and seasonal workers, are paid only 52 cents for every dollar paid to non-Hispanic white men.

Call on Congress to Support Access to Higher Education and Protect Civil Rights
Congress must come to an agreement on the fiscal year 2024 budget, but the Senate and House are miles apart on education spending. While the Senate bill is not ideal, the House bill is an unacceptable attack on education and civil rights. These differences threaten to cause a government shutdown. Urge Congress to keep the government running and pass bills that support higher education and civil rights for all people.

Support for Voting Rights

On September 19, National Voter Registration Day, the AAUW-supported John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was reintroduced in Congress. This bill is in keeping with our public policy priorities of supporting and expanding voting rights by restoring and modernizing the full protections of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965. Make your voice heard, and make sure you are registered to vote

ECONOMIC SECURITY

New Data: Women of Color Face Persistent Wage Gap

In an analysis of new data from the Census Bureau, AAUW found that women took home only 84% of the pay men did in 2022. When looking at all workers, including part-time and seasonal workers, women were paid a mere 78% of men’s wages. The pay inequities are even more startling for women of color. Learn more.
