Support Police Accountability

This week, the House Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee is holding a public hearing on two important bills that will strengthen police accountability. The Access to Fairness Act, HB 1025, authorizes people who have been harmed by police misconduct to sue for violations of the state constitution or state laws, without the federal shield of qualified immunity. This will encourage accountability, training, and better supervision and recognizes that police are not above the law.

The Attorney General Investigations and Reform bill, HB 1445, strengthens and clarifies the AG’s authority to investigate and file suit against law enforcement and local corrections agencies that engage in systemic violations of the state constitution or state laws. This bill will help ensure a baseline of quality policing across our state.
