Meet our 2020 Award Recipients

Photo of Dr. Carrie Cwiak - Recipient of Dr. William K. Rashbaum Award

Dr. Carrie Cwiak received her medical degree from Saint Louis University and completed residency in OB/GYN at the University of Connecticut Health Center. She completed the Fellowship in Family Planning and a MPH in Epidemiology at Emory University in 2003. As a faculty member at Emory, she established the Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program. She served as Medical Director of the Grady Health System Family Planning Clinic, and now, as Director of the Emory Family Planning Division and Fellowship, has helped build one of the largest such divisions in the U.S. She has been active in training fellows, residents, and medical students; speaking and writing to educate providers; advocating for the people of Georgia; and collaborating on research in abortion, contraception, sexual and reproductive health, and general OB/GYN.
 

Photo of Dr. Sheila Ramgopal - Recipient of Dr. George Tiller Award

Dr. Sheila Ramgopal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania for their undergraduate degree and completed a master's degree at Columbia University. They graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and completed their OB/GYN residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Magee-Women's Hospital. Sheila is a 2016 graduate of Physicians' Leadership Training Academy. In 2017, Sheila purchased Allegheny Reproductive Health Center, an independent abortion clinic, from one of their mentors, Dr. Robert Thompson. As the full time Medical Director, they have expanded the practice to include obstetrics, LGBTQIA+ health care, gynecology, and abortion services. Sheila is working to expand abortion access for people in Western Pennsylvania and the surrounding area and helping train the next generation of abortion providers.
