First-Time Slack Login Instructions
Thanks for volunteering with the New Georgia Project Action Fund! Slack is a secure and easy-to-use messaging platform that we’ll use to share important information about volunteering with us. It’s also a place where we can answer any questions you have. Please follow the detailed steps below to sign into Slack for the first time.
1. Complete the Volunteer Agreement before joining New Georgia Project Action Fund Slack 'workspace'.
2. Slack will now ask you to verify your email address. You should receive an email from Slack, titled “Welcome to Slack”, with a link to our Slack ‘workspace’ and your email address.
3. Once you’ve verified your email address, you’ll be prompted to finish creating your account. Type your full name and a password of your choice into the appropriate boxes, and click “Create Account”. If you have a Google email address, you may choose to click “Continue with Google” instead. If you do this, your name and password for Slack will be the same name and password associated with your Gmail account.
4. Agree to the User Terms.
5. You should then see a message like the one below. Click “Explore Slack” to get started!
6. The first thing you should see is a welcome message from “Slackbot”, which serves as an automated guide for Slack. Type anything and hit the enter button on your keyboard. Slackbot will then give you a quick “tour” of the basics of navigating Slack.
7. On the left-hand side of your screen, you’ll see a section titled “Channels”, as shown in the screenshot below.
8. Channels are spaces within the New Georgia Project Volunteer Action Fund Volunteer Slack team devoted to specific topics and volunteer programs. When you first join Slack, you’ll be automatically added to the #general and #random channels. Click on the “Add channels” button to open up the channel browser and view a list of channels, such as #texting-team and #call-team.
9. To join a channel, hover your cursor over it in the channel browser, and click the green “Join” button that appears. This will add the channel to the list on the left-hand side of your screen -- click on the channel name in that list to open it.
10. After you’ve joined the Slack team, we also recommend downloading the app directly onto your computer, tablet, and/or smartphone because the app is easier to keep up with than the browser version. You can download the computer/tablet version of Slack here and the smartphone version in the App Store on your phone.
11. If you run into any trouble navigating Slack, you can read through Slack’s help center articles. For additional information about how the New Georgia Project’s Volunteer Slack, including a list of our important channels, see our Slack Community Guidelines.
