IL Rideshare Drivers Fight For A Union:
A Joint Campaign with SEIU Local 1 and IAM Local 701

Antony Salazar

"I am a member of Local 1 and I am supporting so that those of us who work at Uber can have benefits."

Terri C. Valentine

I think that everyone should have the right of passage to receive decent pay that gives them the ability to procure a quality lifestyle as an Uber driver. Therefore, I support organizing a union for all Uber rideshare drivers.

Jose Orozco

"I am a member of Local 1. I work part time with Uber and I am supporting so that we have a union to obtain benefits."

We’re joining forces with the 50,000 janitors, security officers, school service workers, airport workers, factory workers and more who make up SEIU Local 1 and IAM Local 701.

We will rewrite the rules to win the right to form a statewide Rideshare Drivers Workers UNION.

Together in our union, we will have the power to make sure Uber and Lyft hear us loud and clear when we demand better pay, stronger protections and safer working conditions.

We’re showing up for each other and for our families, and we’re going to work together to make our rideshare industry stronger for drivers and passengers alike.

FAQ’s - Frequently Asked Questions

Rideshare drivers are getting creative, getting organized and breaking new ground to expand what’s possible and win their union rights by passing laws that guarantee rideshare drivers the right to form a union.

In Massachusetts, voters approved a November 2024 ballot measure that grants rideshare drivers in the state the option to join a union no matter what app they drive for.

Inspired by the success in Massachusetts, drivers all across the country — including here in Illinois — are coming together to rewrite the rules, win our union and bring companies like Uber and Lyft to the table to negotiate with us to improve pay, benefits and working conditions.

No one knows how to improve the rideshare industry better than the drivers who are on the roads and interacting with riders every day.

For fifteen years, Uber and Lyft have raised prices for riders while pushing operating costs, such as gas, insurance and maintenance, onto drivers. In their relentless search for profits, Uber and Lyft have left drivers with unpredictable pay which makes it difficult for them to cover rent, bills and other expenses. Meanwhile, compensation packages for Uber and Lyft’s CEOs are among the highest in the world.

Through a union, drivers will be empowered to rebalance the scales, hold Uber and Lyft accountable and build a better rideshare industry.

The IL Rideshare Drivers Fight For A Union campaign is a Joint Campaign with SEIU Local 1 and IAM Local 701. Our goals are to bring together rideshare drivers from across the state to pass legislation allowing drivers to form a union.

Not in Illinois or under any federal law YET. We’re building a movement of rideshare drivers to pass legislation for rideshare drivers to unionize just like drivers did in MA in 2024.
