Identifying the Needs and Taking Action
|
In April 2020, Lawrence North alum, Jill (Robinson) Kramer, and her fellow LT mom friend, Courtney Perez, identified needs in the school community related to the COVID pandemic. That was the spark that ignited a group of caring moms to set a goal to encourage 100 moms to donate $100 each, totaling $10,000, in order to meet the family and student needs that our principals and educators were seeing in each school. They were basic needs such as rent, food, utilities, and transportation caused by the disruption and uncertainty in the world. WOW...how quickly the community reacted! They exceeded their initial goal by encouraging Hundreds of Moms to raise Thousands of Dollars! And #LTMomsCare was successfully launched.

Fast forward to today, and #LTMomsCare has identified a need and is taking action. The #LTMomsCare is raising funds to support RENEWAL, which focuses on LT staff. RENEWAL is defined as reclaiming pieces of you that are lost in the challenges, change, and noise of life. In the same spirit of the airplane safety instructions to put your oxygen mask on first before you can help others, dollars raised by #LTMomsCare will be directed to taking care of the staff so they can take care of our students! Building administrators will define how RENEWAL happens in their respective schools.
It's easy to become part of this caring community. Simply click on the link below! Any donation amount is appreciated! Whether a Lawrence Township parent or grandparent, alumnae, LT alumni parent, LT educator, or maybe you just want to show you care, consider adding your name to this dynamic group! YOU are POWERFUL!

| VEX Robotics competition teams in LT Schools are an emerging “sport” with over 200 students from 1st through 8th grade. It’s a natural extension of the STEM for All focus in every school. LTSF is proud to fund the VEX Robotics program.
In early May, FOUR LT elementary and middle school VEX Robotics teams qualified for the national competition in Dallas, TX, after winning the state and regional competitions. Congratulations to teams from Amy Beverland, Indian Creek, Oaklandon, and Fall Creek Valley! What a great accomplishment for these students to showcase skills such as computer programming, measurement, and data analysis to mobilize their robot in a competition against others in a defined task or against time. They also displayed innovation, teamwork, and problem solving on the national stage!

|
In addition to all LT teams placing well in the competition, the Design Division awarded Indian Creek Team 10394X the Sportsmanship Award. FCV brought home the DESIGN award for their division. #LTPride “The most exciting thing for me is watching students apply what they learn in the classroom like measurement skills to their robotics work,” explained Oaklandon Elementary VEX Robotics Coach, Jennifer Mosier. “VEX Robotics is preparing students with skills aligned with the workforce evolution.”
“Robotics,” a parent explained, “helped my daughter understand for the first time what she’s capable of in areas she didn’t know existed.”
LTSF works closely with the VEX Robotics coaches to ensure every elementary has VEX Robotics equipment and covers the registration fees. We also helped fund the teams’ participation at Nationals. Across the school district, learners begin early development of foundational STEM skills that will affect their and our collective future.
Would you like to support VEX Robotics in LT Schools? You CAN by donating to LTSF. Your gifts make a powerful impact!

As part of LTSF’s Healthy Body Healthy Mind initiative, the Up & Running program is in its 16th year. With the goal of running in the Geist Half 5K on May 21, students are busy training with the running mentors in LT elementary schools. This spring over 375 students are participating. The mission is to challenge students to set and achieve a goal through determination, commitment, and perseverance while benefitting from a healthy habit. Seeing those smiles and high fives as they cross the finish line is heart-warming.

Do You Recognize Any of These Familiar Faces? |
|

It was a morning for catching up, storytelling, and laughing with dear friends and former colleagues. LT retired educators gathered for a light breakfast and brief comments by Dr. Shawn Smith, Superintendent of MSD of Lawrence Township, and Jen Gibbs, LTSF Executive Director, but there was plenty of time for chatting.
“The cumulative years of service in that room was mind-blowing. This group adds to the continuity in the LT Schools and LTSF story. We are so intricately connected and aligned regarding our passion and commitment to LT students,” shared Jen. |
| |
|
Several retirees have continued serving LT students by volunteering at LTSF. It’s a great way to stay connected. We appreciate their ongoing support. If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact Annette Shreves or call 317-423-8300.

Throwing it Back...Memorable Teachers |
Every one of us has at least one teacher who truly made an impact…and they weren’t always the nicest ones <wink wink>. Was it the one who was the most demanding, or perhaps the one who stayed after school to help you? Maybe it was an afterschool club sponsor or chaperone on a school trip. If you have a great and/or funny teacher memory, please share it, along with your LC or LN graduating class year, by emailing nancyliss@msdlt.k12.in.us. We’ll include it in future newsletters.

Legendary Coach Jack Keefer Retires |
|
|
|
Lawrence North High School varsity basketball coach and teacher Jack Keefer announced his retirement. Keefer has coached at LN since it opened 46 years ago, part of a head coaching tenure that has spanned 50 years. He started his career at Oak Hill High School, his alma mater, serving as an assistant coach. With 804 wins at Lawrence North - and 865 wins overall - Keefer ranks second in the state for all-time career coaching victories. His Wildcat teams have won four state championships.
"Coach Jack Keefer is a legendary basketball coach, one who transcends generations," said Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent Dr. Shawn A. Smith. "Coach Keefer has built excellence in his players, resulting in success on and off the court. He is one of the greatest high school basketball coaches in our state and country.”

Congratulations to biomedical engineer, Dr. David Hormuth, Lawrence Central Class of 2006, of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, and Dr. Caroline Chung of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. They have been awarded a $1.2M grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The grant will be used to further develop computational models of the effect of radiotherapy and chemotherapy on brain cancer patients, paving the road for personalized cancer treatment. “As an engineer who is striving to improve cancer care, these types of collaborations are central to understanding the unmet clinical needs, barriers to implementation, and complexities of the disease itself," explained Dr. Hormuth.

Hello Dolly, it’s so nice to have you back where you belong! Indeed, it was a special evening for Jane Ann Vigus Steiner and Harry Walker, Lawrence Central Class of 1971, as they enjoyed watching LC’s Hello Dolly, 51 years after they performed in the same musical. LC Junior, Anna Seitz, reprised Jane Ann’s role of Irene Molloy, and LC Sophomore, Eduardo Palapa, took on Barnaby Tucker, originally portrayed by Harry Walker. Bravo BEARS! |
