UPDATE: This is huge! We reached our 20,000 goal! Will you help us get to 30,000 signatures?
Jorge Gonzalez's 1-year-old son will grow up without a father because of police violence. Jorge was a hardworking man, a loving husband, father, and son.
Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies broke his neck and compressed his spinal cord. Though his injuries were obvious, jail officials covered it up in his booking photo and did not get him medical attention. He went over 21 hours in jail without medical attention. He died three months later due to complications from the injuries. The officers who brutalized him have not been charged.
I denounce the abuse that Jorge Gonzalez suffered at the hands of Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies and jail officials that led to his death. I call on you to immediately:
Release to Jorge's family all video and records related to Jorge's time in custody,
Fire officers Steven Farias and Marco Guerrero, and
Release the names of and fire the officers who arrested Jorge, took his booking photo, and held up his head in the photo.
