Rep. Ormsby: Bring HB 1283 for a vote!

Since Jan 1st, nearly one hundred anti-ESG bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. These bills are a part of a coordinated attack on climate action from the financial sector.

Fortunately, WA legislators are fighting back. HB 1283 would push the $192 billion state pension fund to start treating the climate crisis like the emergency it is. But Appropriations Committee Chair Timm Ormsby is refusing to bring the bill to a vote.

I am a Washington state resident and voter, and I urge you to bring HB 1283 to a vote before the cut-off deadline of February 17th.

The global financial giant, Swiss Re, has estimated that the world stands to lose close to ten percent of total economic value by mid-century if climate change stays on the currently-anticipated trajectory of more than 2°C of warming. If the world warms by 3.2°C, the economic losses will hit $23 trillion by 2050, or eighteen percent of global economic value.

HB 1283 is an important bill as it will ensure WSIB is taking steps to address climate-related financial risk.

Furthermore, members of the Washington state pension fund deserve the freedom to invest their savings in ways that are aligned with their values. There is no doubt many Washington residents like to have the freedom to ensure that their money is being invested in ways that are both aligned with their values and aligned with WSIB’s fiduciary duty.

Finally, it’s important to note that, since Jan 1st, nearly one hundred “anti-ESG” bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. These bills are largely modeled on legislation from the American Legislative Exchange Council, and they are a part of a coordinated attack on climate action within the financial sector. It's an attack that is already having a chilling effect -- some of the world's largest financial companies are publicly walking back their climate commitments in the face of these bills. These are actions that only heighten climate-related financial risk and the hard earned savings of WSIB members.

It's more important than ever that bills, such as HB 1283, are championed by the Washington State legislature in 2023.

Please bring HB 1283 to a vote before February 17th.
