Dear [elected official],

As a Virginian and as your constituent, I urge you to carefully consider the impact any decisions or actions regarding these bills will have. Please SUPPORT Senate Bill 1098 (Hashmi) which aims to safeguard access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare services within the state. Virginia is the last state in the south which has not criminalized reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare. This bill prohibits law enforcement from investigating, arresting, or assisting in any actions related to protected health care activities that are legal in Virginia, even if they might be considered criminal in other states. Please SUPPORT all bills and constitutional amendments that affirm marriage equality (HJ 9 & SJ 249), enshrine reproductive freedom (HJ1 & SJ247), and restore voting rights (HJ2 & SJ248). Please SUPPORT House Bill 1681 (Cohen). This bill requires all state agency forms, reports, applications, or other documents to offer an additional gender designation to align with available gender markers on Virginia driver's license. The bill provides agencies until July 1, 2028, to update their forms to comply with this new requirement. The bill provides allows Virginians to more accurately represent their identity on official documentation. Please OPPOSE the so-called "Medical Ethics Defense Act" bills (House Bill 2605) aka medical refusal bills that would undermine patient care and threaten the right of people to receive lifesaving and essential medical care. Please OPPOSE HB 2405 (Griffin) & SB 1074 (Peake). Every person has the fundamental right to access the health care they need without fear of discrimination, prejudice, or barriers to treatment that supports their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Medical care bans irreparably harm transgender youth. Decisions about this care, which is essential to the well-being of transgender youth, should rest with physicians, families, and the patient. Please OPPOSE HB2146 (Zehr)- This bill amends the existing medical malpractice statute to extend the statute of limitations for legal actions involving gender affirming care for youth. Specifically, the bill establishes a 20-year statute of limitations for medical malpractice claims related to procedures, which is significantly longer than the previous two-year limit for minor-related medical malpractice cases. These increases in medical malpractice will make it so that doctors cannot get malpractice coverage. Please OPPOSE bills that would create unsafe learning spaces such as House Bill 2182 (Freitas) . This would force teachers into the impossible position of risking their job or the safety and well-being of their students. Moreover, forcibly outing students without their knowledge or consent in any circumstance will only result in eroding trust between student and teachers – trust that has proven to foster a supportive educational environment for all students. Please OPPOSE bills that would limit or even ban participation in sports: House Bill 1809 (Oates), Senate Bill 749 (Mulchi), Senate Bill 1079 (Peake). The Virginia High School League (VHSL) already has policies that ensure a level playing field for all students – and they are working. In the 2021-2022 school year, nine transgender athletes were given permission to play. Since the VHSL first approved the inclusion of transgender athletes in 2014, only 28 trans students have asked to play and 25 were granted approval. The existing VHSL policy proves that we can both celebrate girls’ sports and protect transgender youth from discrimination, ensuring that all young people have access to the lessons and opportunities that sports afford.
