PA Legislature: Prioritize $25 million for participant directed home care workers this year

Home care workers have an opportunity to raise rates in the state budget before June 30th. It's urgent that home care workers make their voices heard so that legislators prioritize participant-directed caregivers and care recipients in this year's budget. The deadline for passing the state budget is June 30th, and if we want funding for wage increases, we need to do everything we can to get them to add that money in this year. It's important that your elected official hear from you!

Prioritize participant-directed home care workers in this year’s budget

Dear [elected official],

I am a participant-directed home care worker in Pennsylvania, represented by the United Home Care Workers of Pennsylvania, a joint partnership of SEIU Healthcare PA and AFSCME/1199c. I respectfully call on the House leadership to add $25 million to the Community HealthChoices budget line item in order to ensure every participant can offer their caregiver $15 per hour. This investment would be a step towards making $15 an hour a reality for all Pennsylvanians, which is a commitment and goal of the Democratic caucus. Pennsylvania cannot meet the overwhelming need for quality home care with a workforce that cannot afford basic necessities like housing, food, transportation, and that has no health insurance or time-off. We participant-directed home care workers are currently earning an average wage of $13/hr with no benefits. Raising participant-directed home care wages would lift workers like me out of poverty.

Sincerely, [Your information here]
