The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comments on a roundup and removal plan for the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) on the California and Nevada border. The HMA is made up of nearly 800,000 acres of public and private lands but the BLM's arbitrary population limits known as Appropriate Management Level (AML) is set at 448 to 758 wild horses and 72 to 116 burros. For context, the low AML works out to one horse on every 1,700 acres and one burro for almost every 11,000 acres!
The BLM plans to roundup and remove horses and burros to “achieve and maintain low AML” over the next ten years, implement fertility control on all mares and jennies, manage a non-reproducing population of geldings, and skew the wild horse sex ratio in favor of males.
