The Spokane School Board will be voting on a Public School Resolution Supporting the SPS Student Community Related to Racial Equity at their meeting TONIGHT, Wednesday, June 10. This is the result of years of work by community leaders, parents and students. You can read the resolution here.

I wholeheartedly support “Public School Resolution Supporting the SPS Student Community Related to Racial Equity.” I call on the School Board to adopt and fully fund its sweeping reforms and for the Administration to implement each call to action.

I applaud the resolution’s acknowledgement that racism resides in the bones of Spokane Public Schools, as it does in every structure of society. I support the school district’s commitment to bold actions leading to greater racial equity. I recognize that this resolution intends to initiate, rather than conclude, a cultural shift toward racial equity, and thus I embrace the spirit of its concluding words, “This is just the beginning!”

Further, I call on SPS to replace police officers (CRO’s) patrolling the halls and classrooms with counselors or others trained in restorative justice who make all students feel safe and respected. Endemic to systemic racism is the trauma students of color experience in the presence of police officers, and since no SPS employee will arrest students, we need no arresting officers supervising students.
