I am writing to ask you to oppose the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” Americans were assured that this legislation would reflect greater fiscal responsibility. To date this has not happened. The current version of this bill that is headed to the floor would add an estimated $3.3 trillion to the national debt—an outcome that is both unbalanced and fiscally reckless.

All the while, our national debt exceeds $36 trillion and is now greater than the size of our economy. We are spending more to pay just the interest on our national debt each year than we do to fund our national defense. This will have a significant negative economic effect, including driving up interest rates, increasing the likelihood of serious inflation, and threatening investment in the future of our country.

We can meet national priorities without endangering the economic health and vitality of our nation. I ask that you reject this legislation and urge your colleagues to return to the drawing board. We cannot continue down a path of last-minute negotiations and partial offsets that ignore the true long-term economic consequences. It’s time for Congress to pursue policy priorities with a clear commitment to paying for them.
