Despite multiple lawsuits, federal injunctions, and overwhelming congressional and public opposition, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) just announced that it is again moving ahead with implementing the barbaric surgical procedure, ovariectomy via colpotomy, on wild mares, this time targeting the federally-protected wild horse herds of Utah's Confusion Herd Management Area (HMA), 90 miles northwest of Delta.
It will be the fourth time that the agency has attempted to implement the controversial and cruel procedure that is being pushed by livestock industry lobbying groups and has been held off by legal efforts from the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) and other wild horse and animal advocacy groups.
We can't let this happen! The surgery the BLM wants to perform is an archaic procedure that uses a rod-and-chain-like tool to manually twist, sever and remove the mares' ovaries.
Veterinarians say the surgery carries a high risk of pain, bleeding, infection and evisceration (intestines protruding through the surgical incision). That's why the National Academy of Sciences concluded it was “inadvisable for field application.”
You can see the archaic procedure in this video.
Not only is the BLM considering this brutal procedure of wild mares, but it is also planning to geld wild stallions despite the National Academy of Sciences finding that castration would result in some or total loss of sex drive and is counter to maintaining natural behaviors in free-ranging horses.
Take a stand against this barbaric plan today!
