Donald Trump's reckless withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action brought us to the brink of war with Iran on more than one occasion. President Biden must do as he promised and lead us back toward peace, but he only has a limited time to do so.
The Iranian government has publicly stated that they will return to the terms of the JCPOA immediately if the US will commit to rejoining it as negotiated. We have an opportunity for a major achievement in the early days of the new administration, but President Biden must act now. February 21st is fast approaching, a deadline that will see UN inspectors lose some of their abilities to monitor Iran's nuclear facilities.
We are encouraged to see that Robert Malley was appointed U.S. Special Envoy to Iran. Malley is the ideal person to secure diplomatic re-engagement with Iran and swiftly get the U.S. and Iran back into the JCPOA. Now it's time to finish the job. We have less than 2 weeks before the February 21st deadline, when UN inspectors will lose their ability to monitor some nuclear facilities in Iran.
Let's stand with our allies in the UK, France, and Germany. Let's live up to our word and prevent a new war in the Middle East. Take the lead and rejoin the Iran deal.
