American service members exhibit the utmost bravery and courage when they volunteer to serve our country. To honor and respect these American heroes, Congress must repeal the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) in Iraq. Even though the Iraq war formally ended over 10 years ago, the President still has unchecked power to send American troops into harm's way. This AUMF no longer serves its purpose and is unnecessary. American troops should not be endangered under an AUMF with no clear rationale.
Decisions to take military action require careful deliberation in Congress and this authorization must be repealed for Congress to fulfill its critical oversight responsibility. Join JDCA in urging Congress to repeal the 2002 AUMF to honor American veterans and protect American troops.
Outdated AUMFs are subject to abuse and threaten our national security. These blank checks given to the President to send troops can easily be misused: the decision to go to war should not rest in one person's hands. Congress must fulfill its responsibility to check the power of the President and prevent unilateral and unapproved military action.
Action to repeal the 2002 AUMF is long overdue. Sign here to urge your Senators to support and swiftly pass legislation to repeal this authorization.
