Stop Extremist Attacks on Pennsylvania Schools!

Public Schools in Pennsylvania are under attack. This is an all hands on deck moment.

In recent years, we have seen a deliberate and calculated takeover of school boards across the Commonwealth by extreme right-wing factions. Nowhere is this assault more apparent than in Pennridge School District in Upper Bucks County. While the actions of the Pennridge School Board are extreme, they are not isolated and serve as an extremist model for takeover in districts across Pennsylvania. The orchestrated effort to infiltrate school boards to advance specific political agendas has shifted the dynamics of district oversight.

We are asking Pennsylvania leadership to act urgently and stand up for public education, students, and educators and put policies in place that limit school board overreach and demand accountability to constituents.

Public schools in Pennsylvania are under attack. We are experiencing a deliberate and calculated takeover of school boards across the Commonwealth by extremists on the right.

In the Pennridge School District in Upper Bucks County, their extremist school board is engaged in a multilayered effort to dismantle public education. Within the past two years:

Library books quietly disappeared from shelves.
Teachers were ordered to eliminate ‘safe space’ indicators intended to comfort our most vulnerable students.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives were scrapped.
An unqualified political strategist associated with an anti-government extremist group was hired as a ‘curriculum consultant’ undermining the expertise of our teachers, administrators and librarians.
Policies were enforced that threaten the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth.
Data collection services (PAYS survey) were removed eliminating critical information that enables the support of our most vulnerable students, including services related to student mental health.

While the actions of the Pennridge School Board are extreme, they are not isolated. Districts across Pennsylvania are seeing similar dangerous behavior.
 
Elected leaders need to listen to mainstream parents and not a vocal minority. We know what issues are impacting our kids. We talk about these issues at the bus stop every day:  increased funding for public education, supporting teachers instead of driving them to quit, ending book bans, creating safe environments free from bullying and discrimination, and mental health support for kids who are struggling.

We call on Governor Josh Shapiro, Secretary of Education Khalid Mumin and all State Senators and Representatives to enact legislation or regulation to intervene and put an end to this takeover of our public schools. We also call on the Attorney General Michelle Henry to investigate the Pennridge School Board for negligence of duty. We must protect public education in the Commonwealth and demand School Board accountability.
