Act Now for Klamath-Siskiyou Wild Rivers!

Dear Senators Wyden & Merkley and Representative Val Hoyle,

Thank you for your efforts to protect southwest Oregon's wild rivers. Places like the North Fork Smith, Illinois, and Rogue Rivers are special to many communities and are economic drivers for the region's small businesses and outfitters. Rural communities in these watersheds benefit from conservation measures that protect the natural resources, wildlife, and recreational opportunities that folks from across the globe come to enjoy.

In honor of World Rivers Day and the upcoming anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, I am writing in support of Senate Bill 440 (Oregon Recreation Enhancement Act) and Senate Bill 162 (Smith River National Recreation Area Expansion Act). As a supporter of the Klamath Siskiyou Wildlands Center, I appreciate the efforts over the years to build grassroots and local support for river and fish conservation in rural Josephine and Curry Counties. Rivers are an integral part of life in these parts, and with renewed threats of nickel mining in places like $8 Mountain, Hunter and Baldface Creek, we need permanent protection for waterways like the Wild & Scenic Illinois and North Fork Smith Rivers.

There is bipartisan support in the Senate ENR committee and with companion bills in the House (HR 5004 and HR 6595), I strongly encourage you to prioritize S 440 and S 162 in any potential public lands package in the 118th Congress. With the resurgence of nickel mining speculation in watersheds across southwest Oregon, this is a critical time and opportunity to help preserve clean water, protect a wild salmon stronghold, and maintain many communities' way of life.
