We Demand Leadership on Complete Streets!

We, the undersigned organizations and residents of California, stand together in profound disappointment at the veto of SB 127 - the Complete Streets for Active Living Bill.

The climate crisis affords us no more leeway and we urge Governor Newsom, Transportation Secretary Kim, and Caltrans Director Omishakin to take bold action immediately to make our streets safer for people walking, biking, and taking transit. We call on our transportation leaders to commit to and implement the following actions:

  • Full, meaningful, and immediate integration of Complete Streets in the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP);
  • Setting ambitious performance measures and robust tracking procedures for Caltrans' adopted goals to double walking and transit trips and triple biking by 2020;
  • Issue a Directive to prevent staff from obstructing walking, biking, and transit projects on local streets that do not directly interface with Caltrans facilities but do pass under or over them; and
  • Issue a Directive for SHOPP Project Development Teams to include community-based organizations and affected residents.
