Petition: Incentivizing 100% Soil Healthy Farming in Minnesota

Farmers are on the front lines of the climate crisis – battling extreme weather and changing seasons while also building soil health to sequester carbon and soak up excess water. In developing LSP's Soil Health and Climate Campaign, LSP members were clear: now is the time for landscape-scale transformation.

Our bill, built by farmers from the ground-up, will set a goal to incentivize and provide the resources needed to achieve 100% Soil Healthy Farming:

  • 50% of Minnesota farmers implementing soil-healthy practices by 2030.
  • 100% of Minnesota farmers implementing soil-healthy practices by 2035.
  • 100% of grazable and tillable acres in soil-healthy practices by 2040.

By ensuring soil-healthy practices are profitable from day one through accessible and motivating grants and direct payments, Minnesota's countryside will be abundant with managed rotationally grazed livestock, perennial cropping systems, cover cropping systems, and no-till.

To put this into action, we need YOU. In March, we will deliver this petition to Governor Tim Walz and relevant staff and cabinet members, as well as Minnesota legislative leadership. We must get as many signatures as possible to show public support before the first major legislative deadline in February or March.

We need them to hear us loud and clear: now is the time for landscape-scale solutions.

We urge you to champion and prioritize the Incentivizing 100% Soil Healthy Farming bill, which will provide the resources farmers need to scale up soil- and resiliency-building practices. By ensuring soil-healthy practices are profitable from day one through accessible and motivating grants and direct payments, Minnesota's countryside can be abundant with perennial pastures, perennial cropping systems, cover cropping systems, and no-till.

When we steward healthy soil, we are cultivating vibrant and resilient rural, urban, and suburban communities and economies. We cultivate thriving and resilient land that soaks up rain and sequesters carbon, while fostering healthy ecosystems with clean water and a sustainable climate for microorganisms, wildlife, and people. Yet, Minnesota's farmers are facing compounding challenges of extreme weather, financial crisis, and degrading topsoil. No matter where we live or what we look like, we depend on having a sustainable and just farm and food system – which requires public investment in farming that provides a public good.

The investments we make now will serve us well into the future. Our future and our landscape is up to us. We urge you to join us in investing in the land, Minnesota farmers, and all of our communities – rural, urban, and suburban.
