Dear [elected official],

As of May 2022, 72% of Americans believe birth control should be made free and available for all people, if abortion is not legal (1). In the wake of the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, Congress should listen to Americans by making the critical investments we need to protect our health and lives in the government funding package. I’m writing to urge you to increase investments in reproductive health programs. This includes funding the Title X program, which provides affordable vital health care like birth control in the annual Omnibus funding package. Further, I’m urging you to support the following legislation: The Expanding Access to Family Planning Act (S. 5540 and H.R. 8424) would provide consistent funding and a significant increase in funding for Title X, allowing more people to access family planning services. For content, in 2020, over 1.5 million patients received family planning services through Title X. Because this program is funded through annual appropriations, there is an unpredictable funding stream. The Expanding Access to Family Planning Act would provide consistent funding and a significant increase in funding for Title X, allowing more people to access family planning services. The Right to Contraception Act (HR. 8373) would provide a statutory right to access FDA-approved contraceptives and a right for healthcare providers to provide contraception. The Senate failed to move this bill in 2022. I believe access to contraception should be available to all women (and men) and that it’s in our country’s best interest to support family planning so women can effectively manage when they have children, and all children are best positioned to thrive. Finally, although states can now extend postpartum Medicaid coverage, establishing nationwide postpartum Medicaid coverage would increase access to family planning and contraception as well as basic health coverage.
