Tell your Representative: Vote NO on SCR 1611!

This week, the Kansas House of Representatives will debate and vote on SCR 1611, a resolution changing the way Kansas selects our Supreme Court Justices. It calls for the election of Justices replacing the merit selection process in our Constitution that Kansas has successfully used since 1958.

Electing Kansas Supreme Court justices doesn't put power in the hands of the people. It puts each Supreme Court seat up for sale. Justices will have to campaign like politicians -- raising money, running attack ads, and courting wealthy donors. Who will the Justices listen to once they are on the bench? The law? Or the megadonors who funded their campaigns? Our current system works. It is a merit-based process. A nonpartisan commission, representing all corners of the state, vets candidates and sends the three most qualified ones to the current Governor. The Governor, elected by all Kansans, selects the best candidate of the three for the bench.

Tell your Representative that SCR 1611 isn't about fairness. It's not about justice. It's about selling off the Supreme Court to the highest bidder. Once we put a "For Sale" sign on the Kansas Supreme Court, we may never get justice back.
