Senate Republicans' obstruction and continued efforts to suppress the will of the people are unacceptable. We need immediate action to pass legislation to restore and defend the voting rights of all Americans.
Senate Republicans are using the filibuster -- the much-abused Senate rule that requires 60 votes to end debate on a bill -- to block legislation that most Americans want and need, including legislation to restore and protect the voting rights of all Americans. For the sake of our democracy, we must abolish - or at the very least reform - the filibuster.
JDCA strongly supports passage of comprehensive voting rights legislation, including the Freedom To Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Despite Democrats' best efforts to compromise, Republicans are still using the filibuster to block voting rights legislation. The provisions in these voting rights and elections reform bills are crucial to protecting our democracy from Republican attempts at voter suppression in the 2022 midterm elections and beyond, including by:
Restoring federal voting rights to returning citizens who have been released from prison after serving their sentences
Banning partisan gerrymandering
Mandating automatic voter registration
Making election day a federal holiday
Expanding vote by mail
increasing donor disclosure and campaign finance reform
Addressing foreign interference in elections
Restoring the Voting Rights Act
However, the bill will never pass the Senate until the filibuster, an undemocratic procedural rule, is reformed or abolished. The stakes could not be higher for the Senate to take action on the filibuster. Nothing less than the future of our democracy is at stake.
Join Jewish Dems in urging an end to Republican obstructionism and action on the filibuster by writing your Senators today. The future of our democracy depends on it.
