Utah is home to some of the most incredible climbing and outdoor recreation in the west. Right now, there's a crucial opportunity to support infrastructure for climbing and other outdoor pursuits in the state. The Utah Legislature is currently considering a bill to provide much-needed funding to outdoor recreation infrastructure. This bill, HB 52, would provide a one-time $5 million fund at no additional cost to taxpayers, for outdoor recreation projects.
Currently the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA) is implementing the nation's largest climbing access trail network of its kind on National Forest land with the Grit Mill and Climbing Access Trail Project. Last year, the SLCA was awarded a Waypoint Grant for $15,000, the predecessor to HB52, to support this project. This year we want to continue our work at the Grit Mill and expand our efforts to provide watershed protection, camping, trails, restrooms, and other infrastructure to Joe's Valley.
Along with providing crucial funding for recreation projects around the state, the funds from HB52 will have a direct benefit to climbers, enabling us to continue our work protecting and improving crags across Utah.
