Oppose community fracking and phase out new oil and gas permits

As your constituent, I’m emailing to ask you to take action NOW to protect Colorado's health, safety, air, water, and climate from more oil and gas permitting.

First, I ask for you to please join the growing list of organizations and Colorado leaders signing on to this open letter of support for phasing out new oil and gas permits by 2030 and a just transition to a clean renewable energy future. Secondly, I urge you to speak out now against the approval of more drilling permits near communities in our Front Range Ozone NonAttainment area, which is especially damaging to disproportionately impacted communities of color in Aurora, Weld County, and Commerce City.

Oil and gas is the #1 source of the Front Range's severe ozone non-attainment status and the leading source of GHG emissions causing climate devastation in CO, worsening wildfires and droughts. Though air pollution and climate change affect us all, they impact low-income communities and people of color even more severely as two of the most egregious forms of environmental injustice. Despite Gov. Polis' assertions that passage of SB19-181 would "end the oil and gas wars", the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) has approved permits for over 4,500 new oil and gas wells and denied only one since the bill passed, despite protests from the impacted communities. Also, the Air Pollution Control Division has admitted to botching their plan to address the impact of drilling on our air quality, while persisting in submitting an inadequate ozone remediation plan to the EPA.

The oil and gas wars are NOT OVER. Front Range communities continue to battle for their health and their lives. In the past few months alone, the COGCC has approved permits for over 1000 hazardous, polluting wells near homes and schools in disproportionately impacted communities, including the massive ‘Box Elder’ site in Aurora and over 400 wells at the ‘Guanella’ site in Weld County. The COGCC is poised to approve thousands more wells in residential communities in 2023, including the ‘Lowry Ranch’ site  with up to 174 wells in Aurora, the ‘Centerra’ site in Loveland, and more in Commerce City, which is already suffering from the Suncor refinery’s pollution.

The Colorado Legislature, in reflecting the will of the people, has enacted laws to address Colorado’s GHG emissions and toxic pollution, to prevent the perpetuation of environmental injustice, to increase community  participation in policy-making, and to reduce pollution burdens in disproportionately impacted communities. Frontline communities have been harmed disproportionately for decades by pollution and are impacted more severely by climate change. Colorado must honor its moral and legal commitment to support and protect these communities.
