Tell Your Alder and the Mayor: Support Just Cause for Eviction

Chicago is facing a housing crisis. People are increasingly able to find affordable housing and too many of our neighbors are facing displacement and unjust eviction. The Just Cause for Eviction campaign is working to address that crisis by making it harder for landlords to force people from their homes. You can help by reaching out to the mayor and your member of city council to urge them to support Just Cause.

What is Just Cause?

  • Requires landlords to provide a valid reason for eviction or lease non-renewal (e.g. nonpayment, lease violations, landlord moving into unit)
  • Prevents arbitrary or retaliatory evictions
  • Promotes housing stability and protects tenants' rights
  • Builds stronger, more stable communities across Chicago

Why does Just Cause matter?

  • Displacement, gentrification, and disinvestment disproportionately harm low-income communities and communities of color.
  • Without Just Cause, landlords can choose to not renew leases - even when tenants have paid rent on time and followed all lease terms.
  • Without Just Cause, families and communities are vulnerable to sudden displacement, neighborhood stability, and increased homelessness.

What you can do

  • The ordinance is being introduced to City Council this May 21st!
  • We need a broad community to show its support for the ordinance!
  • Use this form to send a pre-written email to your alderperson and Mayor Johnson, urging them to support Just Cause.
