Tell Senators to Stand Up to Factory Farms!

We have been patient, we have negotiated, and now we have some options in front of us for improving the regulations of the CAFO system in our state. We asked for a moratorium to begin a thoughtful process to address the problems our current system has for water quality, air quality, rural economies, and the viability of small farms, but due to industry pressure, the legislature has been forced to build policy on a much tighter time frame.

This bill will not do everything we want it to and it will not solve the problem. This is the beginning of addressing a complex system. But we can make some progress today!

We need your help to tell legislators that we need to continue to stand up to agribusiness interests in our state and pass the strongest possible CAFO regulation. We also need you to tell them that they cannot assume this is the end! Raise your voice to start us down the road we wanted to travel during a moratorium, let's make sure we get the change that's possible now!

We can stay on the path we’re on, a path that forces small farms to close, drowns out the voices of communities in favor of corporations like Foster Farms, and that creates conditions that will replicate the groundwater disaster in Morrow County; or we can choose Oregon. We are asking you to stand up for the rural communities, small farms, and clean air, water and soil that we all love.

SB 85 -7 is not the end of this road, but it is an important first step.  It gives counties some new tools to control where these industrial facilities go in their rural communities, and it takes the first step to addressing water use loopholes exploited by corporate factory farms. I urge you to support SB 85 with the adopted -7 amendment and keep coming to the table with small farmers and rural communities in sessions to come.
