Scholastic Inc. has eased the way for book banning extremists by creating a special list of “risky” books that schools have to take separate steps to offer their students during book fairs. These books are not controversial or inappropriate — the list includes a biography of Ketanji Brown Jackson and one about Robert Kennedy.
By separating these books into their own collection for “opt-in,” Scholastic is sending a message that the books are problematic and should be avoided. They're taking the most extreme policies from the most extreme state legistures and applying them to everyone! That's why we're telling Scholastic:
Scholastic, we've loved your book fairs for generations! But the optional book list is just bad policy. Please put the Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice books back in the general collection where they belong, and leave the book choices up to the schools, where they belong!
