The Biden-Harris administration has an opportunity to designate new Wilderness Study Areas, a critical protection measure that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hasn't used in over a decade.
For example, in Colorado, nearly 1.5 million acres of public lands managed by the BLM could be protected as WSAs. These wilderness-quality lands harbor important wildlife habitat and migration corridors, provide backcountry recreation experiences, and serve as climate refugia for species adapting to a changing planet. These lands also sequester significant amounts of carbon, help conserve scarce water resources, and protect cultural landscapes and artifacts.
WSA designation is a critical conservation tool because it comes with ready-made protections, such as prohibiting oil and gas leasing and restricting road construction and other development. We need the strongest protections for our wild public lands to meet the Biden-Harris administration's goal of conserving 30 percent of our nation's lands and waters by 2030.
Add your name below and let us know you support WSAs on our public lands! In the weeks and months ahead, we will provide more information about how you can help us protect these beloved places. Thank you!
