The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comments on a roundup and removal of every single wild horse and more than 500 burros from the Lake Meade Complex outside of Las Vegas in Nevada.
The Complex is comprised of the Gold Butte Herd Management Area (HMA), Muddy Mountains Herd Area (HA), and El Dorado Mountains HA. The Complex covers roughly 274,000 acres of public land and is currently home to an estimated 36 wild horses and about 554 wild burros.
The BLM has set the “Appropriate” Management Level (AML) for the Gold Butte HMA at just 22-98 wild burros and no wild horses. The AML for both the Muddy Mountains and El Dorado HAs is 0 wild horses and 0 burros, even though this is historic and protected habitat for these species. This means that the BLM intends to eradicate wild horses from this area and leave a minuscule burro population with a density of one burro per every 3,300 acres! This action will be undertaken despite the documented beneficial impacts that burros have in the desert ecosystems where they live.
We must continue to speak up for wild burros and horses! Please take a moment to personalize and send the EA comment letter below.
