Support All New Yorkers' Right to Clean Air and Water

Many New York State residents are not aware that New York's Constitution does not guarantee them a right to drink clean water and breathe clean air. The right to a healthful environment—which all human beings need to thrive—should be as fundamental as a person's right to free speech and assembly. We think New Yorkers deserve better.

The New York Green Amendment will grant the right to clean air, clean water, and a healthful environment for all New Yorkers regardless of economic stature or location. The bill, first considered last year, has recently passed the Senate and we are now trying to build momentum to get it through the Assembly in the current legislative session. If successful, the voters of New York will decide whether to amend the state constitution on the November 2021 ballot.

I’m writing to express my support for the “Green Amendment” to the New York State Constitution recognizing the inalienable and self-executing right of all New Yorkers to clean water, clean air, and a healthful environment.

Making these basic environmental rights inalienable as part of the New York State Constitution will send a clear message that New York is indeed a true national leader on environment justice. Putting environmental rights on par with other political and civil liberties will foster better decision-making that takes these rights into consideration at all levels of government. This “Green Amendment” will also help prevent future pollution and correct existing conditions in which water, air, or land has already been contaminated.

We, the public, have pushed for this, and are now asking that you do everything you can to get the referendum on this November’s ballot so the voters of this state can make the final decision and choose to protect the health of all New York’s residents.
