As your constituent, I am reaching out to ask you to become a cosponsor of H.R. 1178 the Alpha-gal Allergen Inclusion Act. This bill would require the Food and Drug Administration to add alpha-gal to the list of major food allergens.  Doing so would help people with AGS more easily identify food that is unsafe for them by requiring labeling in plain language on packaged food sold in the U.S. in the same way that the other top allergens – milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, shellfish, fish, and sesame - are already labeled.

Alpha-gal syndrome is an emerging, tick bite-associated allergy. People with AGS have severe and sometimes life-threatening reactions to a sugar found in mammals and products and ingredients derived from mammals, including hundreds of mammalian byproducts in packaged foods. Due to growing lone star tick populations, the number of cases of AGS is increasing at an alarming rate. The CDC estimates that up to 450,000 Americans may be affected, making AGS the 10th most common food allergy. In some areas, 3% or more of the population is affected. Up to 75% of people with alpha-gal syndrome have life-threatening, anaphylactic reactions–a higher percentage than even people with peanut allergy.

Compared to other allergens, mammal derived ingredients are much more difficult to identify. There are hundreds of mammalian byproducts with strange names like monoglycerides and oleic acid. Trying to decipher food labels is extremely difficult for me and my family, yet my health depends on getting it right.

Please help support the health and safety of your constituents with alpha-gal syndrome by cosponsoring H.R. 1178.
