More than 300,000 Tennesseans could lose their health care coverage and become uninsured, and many others might see their health insurance premiums skyrocket without federal action as pandemic-related health policies expire. Congress should take swift action to help avert two approaching health care crises facing Tennesseans. Federal policymakers can help protect Tennesseans from losing health coverage during the “unwinding” of our Public Health Emergency (PHE) policies and prevent steep premium increases later this year when the American Rescue Plan's Premium Tax Credit enhancements expire.
Because of our state legislature's refusal to expand Medicaid, many losing their Medicaid coverage will fall into the coverage gap and become uninsured. This will include large numbers of young adults who have turned 19, and low-income parents whose income has risen above the state's very low-income thresholds.
An economic package that Congress considers through the fast-track process known as reconciliation is the best chance, and possibly the only chance, to enact legislation before the enhanced premium tax credits expire and before the Public Health Emergency is set to end. This is Congress' best opportunity to protect coverage and ensure Tennesseans maintain access to affordable coverage.
Please email Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty and tell them to act now to ensure Tennesseans continue to have access to good quality, affordable health coverage after the Public Health Emergency ends.
